Designer Scam – The Fake Check
A customer contacts you wanting you to build a web site. They want to pay with a check to avoid getting scammed (sense of humor, right). They send you a check for an amount over your fee or deposit fee.
The Scam: They want you to pay some other 3rd party out of the check. You deposit the check, and it clears. You send the money to the 3rd party (the graphics designer who has the logo for example) via western union. A month or so later the check is declared a fake by your Bank, and you’re in the hole.
The Solution: Never ever ever agree to send money to a 3rd party, no matter how plausible the excuse. It takes 30-90 days for a check to be declared fake, but the Bank will clear it before then. What a bad system, but that’s what is. If a customer suggests it, RED ALERT!
